Notes

In past times, Taoists knew of these dangers and evolved ceremonies in which they invoked higher powers to aid them, such as the Three Pure Ones . This reflected the shamanistic roots from which Taoism developed. But in modern times, the unity of Taoism has been broken up into parts, so that in the West people study aspects of Taoism without proper knowledge of the importance of the religious aspect of the faith. For such people, to embark on the alchemical transformation of the soul, is to begin a perilous journey, for when the Dark Side strikes they will be without protection.

Tsia Tung: Well, the dark side may be approaching us right now, because I can see the street lights have appeared. Sifu, it has been a pleasure, but I must leave now.

Fu Hsiang: Go safely and in peace.
