Tsia Tung: Nobody can fail to
miss them. All around the old is making way for
the new. Buildings are torn down and new ones are
put in their place. Factories are being built and
roads are widened and improved. People are
leaving the countryside and making their way to
cities to get jobs. China is changing every day.
Fu Hsiang: Everything you say is
true. But what of the people themselves? How do
they compare to the people you knew when you were
a child?
Tsia Tung: They are different
too. In the old days everybody read the thoughts
of Chairman Mao. There were worker's meetings
everywhere, and people discussed only the
revolution. They worked hard for Communism and
they had ideals. Now people are only interested
in making money. They are selfish and think only
of themselves. The children are not respectful as
they once were. The one child policy23 has produced a
nation of little emperors who are spoilt. If we
are not careful we will end up like the Americans
who care only for money.37
